Application

In built-up roofing (BUR), bitumen, more commonly called tar or asphalt, is melted down to a liquid state and spread on flat or low-sloping roof surfaces to provide a protective and strong waterproof seal. Hot asphalt kettles are large, sometimes trailer-mounted, vats that can hold hundreds of gallons of bitumen, making them ideal for commercial roofing jobs.
